Seasonal Maintenance Tips for Hot Tubs

Updated: Nov 12, 2024

Hot tubs require different care and adjustments as the seasons change. Keeping up with seasonal maintenance ensures your spa is always in top condition, providing a safe, enjoyable experience year-round. Here’s a simple guide for maintaining your hot tub through the seasons.

1. Spring: Deep Cleaning and Inspection

Spring is the perfect time to do a thorough cleaning, especially if your hot tub hasn’t been used frequently over winter.

-   Drain and Refill: Drain the hot tub completely, clean it, and refill with fresh water.

-   Clean Filters: Soak the filters in a cleaning solution to remove any buildup and then rinse well.

-   Inspect Equipment: Check jets, heater, and pumps for any wear or leaks. Look for any signs of damage on the cover.

-      Balance Chemicals: Test and balance the water, ensuring pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels are in the ideal range.

2. Summer: Frequent Testing and Water Temperature Adjustments

In summer, hot tubs are often used more, and higher temperatures can affect water chemistry.

-   Test Often: Test water chemistry 2-3 times a week to keep it balanced.

-   Lower Temperature: Set the temperature a bit lower for more comfortable soaks on hot days and to reduce energy costs.

-   Increase Sanitizer Levels: Warm weather can cause bacteria to grow faster, so keep sanitizer levels in check.

-   Check Water Level: Hot weather can cause more evaporation. Refill as necessary.

3. Fall: Prepare for Cooler Weather

Fall is an ideal time to prepare your hot tub for the coming cooler months if you plan to use it or get it ready for winter if not.

-   Replace Filters: Start fall with clean filters to help maintain water quality.

-   Adjust Cover: Make sure the cover fits snugly and has no damage to improve heat retention.

-   Clean Surrounding Area: Keep leaves and debris away from the hot tub, as they can clog filters.

-   Increase Testing Frequency: Cooler weather can make balancing chemicals more challenging. Test weekly to keep levels steady.

4. Winter: Protect and Insulate

For those who use their hot tub in winter, it’s essential to protect it from freezing temperatures. If you’re closing it for the season, winterize it properly.

If Using Through Winter:

-   Maintain Water Temperature: Keep water warm to prevent freezing. Consider investing in a thermal cover for better insulation.

-   Add Anti-Freeze: For extreme cold, add a hot tub-safe anti-freeze to the plumbing if you’ll be away or unable to use the tub.

-   Check Equipment: Test the heater, pump, and insulation to ensure they’re working efficiently.

If Not Using in Winter:

-   Drain Completely: Drain the tub and use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any water from the plumbing.

-   Clean and Cover: Clean the tub thoroughly and cover it tightly to keep out debris.

-   Disconnect Power: Disconnect the power to ensure safety over the winter months.

Additional Tips

-   Regular Cleaning: Wipe down the waterline regularly to prevent buildup and cloudy water.

-   Protect from Direct Sunlight (in summer): Consider using a spa umbrella or shade to keep the cover and outer shell in good condition.

-   Monitor Weather Changes: Sudden changes in weather can affect water chemistry and temperature, so adjust as needed.
